Human Environmental Interaction

Adapting/Interacting with Environment

Water resources and irrigation infrastructure occur variously throughout Peru. The costal region contains about two thirds of the countries whole irrigation systems. 17% of Peru's land is irrigated while 27.7% is cultivated for irrigation. The highlands and Amazon regions are home to Peru's poorest people who rely on subsistence or small-scale farming. Bridges in Peru include Inca Rope Bridge, Inca Bridge, Puente de Piedra, and Verrugas Bridge. There are two main dams in Peru, they include Antamina Tailings Dam and Limon Dam.

Economy

Peru has a wide variety of mineral resources. Copper, iron, lead, zinc, bismuth, phosphates, and manganese exist in great quantities around Peru. While gold and silver are found rather exstensively. Petroleum fields are located on the North coast and Northeastern part of Peru. Most of Peru's larger factories are located in the Lima area. Peru's factories commonly produce petroleum, textiles, processed food, steel, cement, fertilizer, and chemicals. The leading employment sections in Peru are fishing, mining, and manufacturing. Peru's main trading partner is the United States, others include China, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Ecuador. Well known tourism locations are Cusco, Lima, Arequipa, Puno, Colca Canyon, Iquitos, Huaraz, and many others.

Environmental Concerns

The principal environmental issue in Peru are water pollution, soil erosion, air pollution, and deforestation. The Peruvian Environmental ministry is developing regulation and laws to decrease the amount of pollution created in major cities and making policies in order to decrease the present deforestation rate. La Chira Landfill, Lima, Peru is a landfill in the small beach just South of Lima. This beach now acts as a dumping ground and an exit point for Peru's waste-water.
